ktvu's ken pritchett is live in the nation's capital where he spoke with people who were thrilled to be a part of history. ken? >> reporter: by one estimate the crowd size at this inauguration was bigger than expected, 1 million people. we were in with that crowd as they converged on the capital. many who said getting around was easier than four years ago. >> the streets of washington were clogged with convoys, such as this one. with vendors hocking anything with the president's image and the lines were long just to get through security but spirits were high. >> i am expecting a good events. >> reporter: this is the view from the capital steps where the presidents took the oath of office. >> definitely a different number of people. not as many people as there was before but it is still an amazing feeling. >> reporter: from the ceremony in the capital, many made their way to pennsylvania avenue, to get a look at the president. most just saw the motorcade. >> he got out and got back in.

i saw him wave and get back in. >> reporter: despite the grid lock we have seen over the past four years, especially in the last few months, there was a feeling of optimism in the crowd. tonight the mind is on celebration. there are two official balls taking place right now. we will have more on that in a few minutes. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. everyone else under the law. surely the love must be equal as well. >> it is the first time the issue of gay rights has been mentioned in an inaugural address. >> the opera house opened its doors for a watch party today. >> my fellow americans, the oath i have sworn before you today -- >> people gathered to watch president obama's faith in america's future speech. one woman came for the atmosphere and a speech that is all about community involvement. >> you know, he strikes the right amount of hope and challenges all of us to step forward and participate in our government which is important. >> people were thrilled the festivities on the day that honored martin luther king, jr. for more on today's festivities

invasion robbers. two homes were innovated. the first homeowner lost jewelry and cash and unharmed. the second location a suspect punched the home owner and locked the husband down stairs. one of them shot through the front window of the house. police are asking for help in identifying a man who shot at employees while attempting to rob the store. police say the man entered the store saturday night demanding money. two retreated to a room with bullet proof glass as the suspect fired. anyone with any information is asked to call police. rescue in the waves today. officials say a surfer started suffering cramps before noon and couldn't swim back to shore so he climbed on seal rock.

it was too rough for a rescue boat to get close to the boat so swimmers had to convince him to jump back into the water to get him to safety. the 49ers are heading to the super bowl. fans are scrambling to get their gear and for some that means tickets for the big game. >> robert handa is live where 49er fever is running high. robert? >> reporter: 5:00 p.m. we showed you what jim harbaugh and the team are focusing on. for fans, it has them searching for tickets, souvenirs and a way to see the super bowl in person. >> reporter: each day the new stadium looks more like a place for a super bowl and it is considered for the 2016 game but today fans are trying to get to this year's super bowl. >> getting the cash and ready

luxury suits. >> reporter: as you heard the cost of a super bowl trip depends on your package deal. the most complete packages run about $6,000 a piece but that includes tickets, hotel and airfare. robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. a fight following yesterday's game sent a falcon's fan to the hospital with a knife wound. a fancon's fan started arguing with a 49ers fan. the fan punched him who then pulled out a knife and stabbed the fan in the throat. the victim is expected to be recover. the 49ers fan is still at large. members of several occupy groups rallied today in san francisco to voice anger at wells fargo. more than one person accused wells fargo of shabby treatment. >> at one time as a counselor i

tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. lawyers say they are taking their case to the california supreme court. she won in a lower court only to see the verdict over turned. she claimed they terminated her because she became pregnant. inspectors are testing water wells near a proposed casino. some fear the casino will use up their water supplies. the website reports inspections started last week to determine water levels before construction starts. 24 of the world's best surfers competed yesterday in the mavericks. it was the first time in three years the competition has been
